
EIB Group Invests €314 Million in Hungary to Strengthen Rail, Energy, and SME Sectors
The European Investment Bank (EIB) Group provided €314 million in financing for Hungary in 2024, focusing on rail service improvements, power grid expansion, and small business support. This investment reflects the EIB’s long-standing role in Hungary, with more than €25 billion invested since 1991 to enhance infrastructure and economic resilience.
Investment Breakdown
Rail Modernization – €160 Million
Funding was allocated to regional railway operator GYSEV to modernize network infrastructure and replace outdated diesel-powered trains with new electric models. The project aims to:
- Improve rail connections between Hungary and Austria
- Increase train reliability and efficiency
- Reduce travel times and environmental impact
Power Grid Expansion – €90 Million
The EIB supported Hungary’s energy companies E.ON and MAVIR to strengthen the electricity grid and meet growing industrial power demands. The investment will:
